The Hindu Vocabulary : Part 5


1) Turmoil (Noun) - 

a state of confusion, uncertainty or disorder

tumult, convulsion, upheaval, turbulence, pandemonium

বিক্ষোভ, অশান্তি, টালমাটাল অবস্থা

The country is in turmoil for war.

Mr. Basu grew up in the turmoil of the 1940s.


2) Coalition (Noun)

an alliance for a purpose

union, amalgam, consolidation, league, caucus, alignment, fusion

জোট, মোর্চা

All the opposition parties have united to form a coalition.

The country will have a coalition government.


3) Incumbent (Adj) 

currently holding an official position 

officeholder, custodian, keeper, holder

পদধারী, পদস্থ 

The incumbent president faces problems for the serious allegations imposed against him.

(be incumbent on/upon someone means to be necessary (for someone) as a duty or responsibility, it is incumbent on them to pay all dues.)


4) Consolidate (Verb) 

to bring together into a unified whole, to merge

combine, united, fuse, integrate, amalgamate, blend, mingle, conjoin

একত্র করা, সমন্বিত করা

The two companies consolidated ten years ago.

(consolidate means to strengthen also, the marriage will surely consolidate their relationship.)


5) Revoke (Verb) (Noun form - Revocation)

officially cancel or withdraw a law, permision, decree or an agreement 

repeal, annul, abrogate, dismiss, invalidate, nullify, quash, renounce, rescind, set aside, void

প্রত্যাহার করা, বাতিল করা, তুলে নেওয়া, নাকচ করা

When she proved her innocence, the judge revoked her jail sentence.
